In my experience, significant others enjoy this game. It's just the right mix of clean rules, short play time, strategy, and luck.By way of example, my wife would never request a game of Agricola or Dominant Species, but she will request a game of Lords of Waterdeep.
As for two players, I think it plays quite well but I would suggest removing the mandatory quests as they aren't as much fun in a two player game. I view them as a kill the leader tactic and in a two player game, killing your wife/gf out of their final last round plans isn't really fun in my opinion. Pouncing on a leader in a 4 or 5 player game however is a different thing.
