I didn't want to get rid of the cards by resting because I would lose victory points and I decided against Prepare much because each time I did it I would lose a monster into the village and have VPs stacked against me.
I've had the same problems both solo and with others. People I've played with seem reluctant to use rest action because it only removes one card and can't remove monsters. We've tinkered a bit with combining Prepare and Rest actions as follows:
1. You can "remove"two cards from your deck, either village cards to destroy or curses to destroy or monsters to "set aside" (i.e., remove from deck but still score them at game end); and
2. You can then take a normal Prepare action with whatever cards you have left over in your hand.
This speeds things up and avoids deck clog, although I suppose expert players would say that deck clog is part of the game. In solo games it's a serious problem because of the time pressure. It's just not fun to play the game when you keep drawing hands that are half filled with monsters.
