Let me just say that my wife left our 4-player game after a couple of rounds playing the intermediate variant of the game very frustrated because of all the upkeep, small cubes and military cards and she wouldn't play with us anymore ;)I believe the game is rather complicated and it requires several plays in order to get all the rules right and play it seamlessly. Also, the interaction is limited, in my opinion, as most of the players focus on their own civilization and not to screw up rather than on how to affect other players. Maybe this changes after a couple of plays but we still haven't reached that level and we haven't played the full version of the game neither.
