I played the Apprentice game with my 10 year old girl and 6 year old boy successfully although they may not get all the nuances and be able to play very competitively.My boy does like the game and managed to play a game with me with minimal help and clarifications from me. He played the Beastmaster.
Btw, the suggested easier to play mages are Beastmaster and Warlock (from the Mage Wars forums :) ).
