My gamming group tends to play citadels only when in large groups.I have problems with both witch and assassin.
The Assassin can't have his money stolen and can randomly select any caracter since he has nothing to loose. Also, he is the first choice for players who seek the end of the game, since he can't be harmed.
The witch has very little chance of not beeing able to build and she always take her action, also, she is immune to the thief.
Last game I played, or rather tried to play, made that clear. I never had a chance to play, because I was bewitched every single turn. That happend because everyone figured it was safer to get the witch, no matter who you want to bewitch. When I tried to get the king to choose, she was distributed to the last player.
